Celebrate Our Stories
The African American Cultural Heritage District is located on hallowed ground. From the first African American high school in the State of Texas to the birthplace of Juneteenth, this district holds powerful stories that shaped not only the island of Galveston, but the nation.
Rooted in generations of cultural contributions, the district honors the legacy of Black teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, and activists who built a community of excellence and pride.
Through historic preservation, education, and celebration, we continue to uplift these stories – ensuring they are experienced by all who visit.

Experience the living history of the African American Cultural Heritage District through year-round events that celebrate our cultural heritage and community. Our events invite you to step into the story and become part of the district’s living legacy.
This annual festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, with over 75% of the public parade routes running through the AAHCD. The family-friendly festivities feature elaborate floats created by local artists and craftsmen, making this an unforgettable experience for all.
Held annually, this family-friendly film series offers a relaxed outdoor movie experience featuring a blow-up screen, food trucks, and blankets on the grass. This event, hosted by the Galveston Historical Foundation, provides fun for all ages.
Our indoor painting classes foster creativity and connection within a supportive space. These classes have been a staple for two years, drawing a diverse crowd with a focus on senior participants. Instructors guide students of all skill levels as they explore their artistic talents.
For over five years, the Urban Sketchers group has been capturing the essence of the district, culminating in a vibrant art showcase at ARToberFEST, in collaboration with the Downtown District and Visit Galveston. ARToberFEST offers attendees the opportunity to view our local artwork up close and meet the brilliant artists.
For over 40 years, The Bandshell at Menard Park has been a gathering place for African American cultural expression. This iconic venue hosts spoken word and comedy performances, with artists and collectives using the space to connect with the community. Performers self-promote and schedule their events, creating a lively atmosphere in this historic location.
The Old Central Cultural Center serves as a hub for cultural programming, including the Juneteenth Grant Series. The series, funded by the Park Board grant program, highlights the intersection of culture and activism in the district.

Getting In and Around AACHD
There is no other place on Galveston Island that provides visitors with such easy access to a variety of major attractions and assets!
AACHD is home to Courville Stadium, the Pleasure Pier, Kempner Park, Old Central Cultural Center, Menard Park, and the Bandshell, all in close proximity.
Strategically located near the 4th busiest cruise terminal in the U.S., bordered by Seawall Boulevard and Interstate 45, and just minutes from Scholes Airport, visitors can reach this cultural hub from land, sea, and sky.
Once here, you can easily explore the many attractions with ease, using:
An extensive city bus route
Rubber-wheeled trolleys and the rail trolley along the Southern and Eastern borders
Two north-south and two east-west thoroughfares with bike lanes
