The African American Cultural Heritage District (AACHD) is a vibrant, historic cultural destination in the heart of Galveston, Texas.
Endorsed by the Galveston City Council and officially designated as a Cultural Arts District by the Texas Commission on the Arts, Our Mission is to preserve and celebrate the cultural legacy of Galveston’s African American community through arts, education, economic development, and community events.
Spearheaded by the Old Central Cultural Center and recognized as the birthplace of Juneteenth, the AACHD is home to landmark events, iconic historical sites, and a thriving network of local businesses and artists. Whether you’re walking through centuries of heritage or engaging in today’s creative expressions, the district invites all to experience, honor, and contribute to a living legacy.

To work with local citizens, tour operators, hospitality representatives, restaurateurs, artists, government departments, and other key stakeholders to cultivate and build on arts and culture-focused events, programs, and assets within the district

Our Founders:
Old Central Cultural Center, Inc.
The hub of the district is Old Central Cultural Center, the first higher education institution for African Americans in the State of Texas, originally established in 1885.In 1974, Old Central Central Cultural Center, Inc. was founded to host diverse and culturally imperative programming, honoring the enduring spirit and historical importance of the school, the community, and Galveston. By driving cultural tourism, the organization remains committed to preserving heritage, supporting education, and instilling community pride in Galveston.
